Dear Ashker’s Community, Firstly, we want to give thanks to our entire community, customers, staff, and friends who have supported us for the last six years here; we have enjoyed our time here so much, made so many great memories and have met so many great friends! However, we no longer see our Elmwood or Main St. locations as being permanent homes for our growing company. You may have noticed some changes to this street recently. We have also had changes in our relationships with these two locations. While change can be good, in this case, the changes happening do not align with our vision for the future of Ashker’s. Rest assured, we are not leaving Buffalo, and you will be able to find the same experience you know and love here at our other locations. Excitedly, we have opened Ashker’s Blackrock, located at 414 Amherst St. Buffalo (6am - 9pm Monday - Saturday, Closed Sunday). And coming this winter, we will be located inside the ACB building at 69 Delaware just across from City Hall. This will mean that the Elmwood and Main St. locations will close during this transition sometime in the next few months. While we look for a new operator who wants to make these locations their new home, we will enthusiastically remain open here and committed to serving the community for the time we have left. Art as an additional yield of regenerative ecology: Beforest Garden Design, as a result of their work planting edible landscapes and foraging with the seasons, captured the images and stories on exhibit for the month of January at Ashker’s on Elmwood. "The Year 2016 According to Trees" explores in stunning image and engaging text the ancient practice of co-production. Humans partnering with natural forces provide their sustenance in a way that does not deplete natural resources but instead increases the ability of the land to give while supporting the ecosystem. Our mission shifts the conversation from sustainability to regeneration. Trees represent our most direct connection to Earth, creating the atmosphere we need in order to breathe while providing all our essential needs. We must re-evaluate the importance of trees in our culture by recognizing them as the solution to the defining issues of our age: food scarcity, climate stabilization, and access to clean air and water. Imagine a world in which previous generations had planted large numbers of long-lived fruit and nut-bearing trees in common areas as a gift to the future. Tree crops are the foundation of a perennial-based food system that requires fewer inputs, creates habitat, and restores soil fertility. Trees do all this while providing free food, fuel, and building materials sustainably for us humans. Now is the time for us to become the ancestors who decided to plant the trees that allow an abundant future to be. This is the wake-up call. Beforest Garden Design and WNY Permaculture invite the participation of all who wish to be reintroduced to our original allies.
